The treatment of Methamphetamine (P) addiction is a specialised area that relies heavily on the care environment and a defined yet flexible treatment plan. While the medical detox can be completed in as little as 4 days the psychological effects of this dangerous drug can take years to be properly addressed. There is a mountain of evidence clearly showing that prolonged use of meth (p) will eventually result in a brain injury not too dissimilar to one suffered during a motor car accident affecting the frontal lobe of the brain. This means that some meth addicts could have permanent brain damage depending on how long they have used the drug. In early recovery and after medical detox the addict should not be required to be on a strict timetable nor should they be required to spend too much of their time writing. Treatment plans that prescribe to a 12 step model may in fact not be the best place for meth addicts in early recovery. At Serenity we can offer private detox for some meth addicts. Because we individually treat each client on how they present and what their underlying problems may be we can very easily formulate a treatment plan to make the client eventually see that meth is not what they need in their life. With the non using of the drug the client will see that their old way of life and associates need to be left behind and a new way of life can be found. Treatment for meth is not a quick process. It may be that our inpatient clients could spend up to 90 days within treatment. Our out-patient service will ensure that once they have completed their treatment they have a plan for staying off meth. In some cases out-patient couselling may be used prior to a client coming into our care thus ensuring that each client is totally motivated to change.
